BARA Founder Speaks at Air Force Memorial
MAY 2026
On May 6 at 10 a.m., the Air Force Memorial will host an engaging installment of its History Lecture Series focused on the Berlin Airlift, one of the most significant humanitarian and strategic operations in modern military history. This special event, commemorating the milestone date of May 12, 1949, invites attendees to reflect on the courage, determination, and international cooperation that defined the effort to sustain West Berlin during the Soviet blockade. Guests will have the opportunity to hear from distinguished speakers including Colonel Michael von Maltzahn, Air Attaché of the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Mr. Eddie Ide, founder of the Berlin Airlift Remembrance Alliance (BARA), both of whom are expected to provide unique historical insight and personal perspectives on the enduring legacy of the mission. The lecture promises to explore how Allied aircrews delivered vital food, fuel, and supplies to millions of civilians while demonstrating the resolve of democratic nations during a tense early chapter of the Cold War. Supported by the U.S. Air Force Band and Honor Guard, the program is likely to offer both educational depth and ceremonial significance, making it a memorable occasion for history enthusiasts, veterans, students, and members of the public interested in Air Force heritage. This gathering at the Air Force Memorial serves not only as a tribute to those who participated in the Berlin Airlift, but also as a reminder of the power of service, resilience, and unity in times of crisis.
